Greetings – I just started doing residential real estate in and around Helotes, TX recently. I am working with Realty Executives – Select Properties. I worked the residential real estate market in the Lakeway, Bee Cave and Lake Travis area on the west side of Austin for 8 years prior to moving to Helotes.
Helotes is a small city on the northwest side of San Antonio (Go Spurs Go!). Helotes is a bit more upscale than many parts of the San Antonio metro area. It has traditional subdivisions and ones that once were out in the county.
For example, the home I am in is in the city limits of Helotes, but the house sits on a hill on a little over 4 acres. I can hear the music from the John T Floore Country Store and smell the Mexican food from El Chaparral when the wind is right.
Speaking of Floore’s, as most of us call it, this classic Texan dance hall is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is a Texas Historic Landmark that has drwntop musical talent to its stages like Willie Nelson, Elvis Presley, Hank Williams, B.B. King, Little Richard, Bob Wills, Ernest Tubb, Patsy Cline, Jerry Lee Lewis, Merle Haggard, Ray Price, George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Dwight Yoakam, Lyle Lovett and his Large Band, Robert Earl Keen and many, many more.
The name Helotes sounds kind of funny – where did it come from? The area has been inhabited for 5,000 years by nomadic Indians, Tonkawas, and Comanches. They moved out when farmers and ranchers took over. Many farmers grew corn. The name Helotes came from the Spanish word elotes or corn-on-the-cob. The city was very rural for a long time, but finally incorporated in 1981. Traditional subdivisions came to Helotes after that.
People choose to live in Helotes for a variety of reasons. The schools are excellent and many homes have terrific Central Texas Hill Country views. As of today just about anything anyone would want or need is within 15 minutes. We have the big box retail stores, many restaurants, doctors, lawyers, dentists, fast food restaurants, urgent care clinics and much more.
Iron Horse Canyon is a subdivision in Helotes. Current homes for sale range from $229,000 to $899,000. The less expensive homes are near the entrance and the more expensive ones are at the back of the subdivision. Neighborhood amenities include a pool, clubhouse and tennis courts. Part of Iron Horse Canyon back up to Government Canyon State Natural Area and many residents see a lot of wildlife.
